What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective coating of nerve cells, leading to communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. The symptoms of MS vary widely and can include fatigue, difficulty walking, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, problems with coordination and balance, vision problems, and cognitive difficulties.
